I haven't read this book myself. I do understand that it is an alternate history novel mainly about Operation Coronet (the planned final invasion, of Honshu), although also touching on Operation Olympic (the planned earlier invasion, of Kyushu). Apparently the point of divergence is that the Trinity test fails, atomic weapons are therefore not available in 1945, and the Allies therefore invade Japan. From what I have heard, I believe that the failed Trinity test and Operation Olympic are mainly dealt with as historical incidents in the novel, and the main focus is thus on the events during Operation Coronet.
